Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
