The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
