Vladimir Putin has sworn to take swift countermeasures against what he termed Europe’s “escalating militarisation”, while brushing off Western fears that Moscow plans to strike Nato as “absurdity”.
Putin’s Remarks at Valdai
Speaking at length in Sochi on the recent Thursday, Putin stated: “Our attention is fixed on the rising armament of Europe … We simply cannot ignore what is happening. We have no right to do so for reasons of our own security.”
“I think no one doubts that Russia’s countermeasures will not be delayed,” he added, addressing the Valdai discussion club, a regular assembly of diplomats and specialists where Putin often outlines his views on international issues.
European Summit Amid Growing Friction
These comments came as 45 European leaders convened in the Danish capital for a summit aimed at bolstering support for Ukraine and fast-tracking security plans intended to ensure the Europe is capable of deterring Moscow’s hostile actions.
The meeting followed a period of instability in which various EU states reported intrusions by Moscow’s drones and jets, heightening anxieties that Russia was challenging Nato’s commitment.
The Russian Leader’s Diplomatic Gesture Toward Trump
Despite his warnings to Europe, Putin adopted a friendly tone toward Trump, even after the US leader’s recent disparaging remarks about him.
In what appeared to be an attempt to regain Trump’s approval, Putin lavished praise on him, stating that “had Trump remained president, the hostilities in Ukraine could have been prevented” – a line Trump has often used himself in official remarks.
Both Moscow and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have spent a long time trying to gain Trump’s support over the war in Ukraine, as Trump has repeatedly shifted his stance.
In recent weeks, Kyiv appeared to come out ahead, with Trump expressing dissatisfaction in Putin for extending the conflict and dismissing Russia’s economy and military as a “weak opponent”.
Change in American Stance
As per sources, Trump recently permitted Washington’s security bodies to help Ukraine carry out attacks within Russia’s borders – a step which would amount to a notable adjustment in American strategy under his guidance.
Zelenskyy has also advocated American authorities for Tomahawk cruise missiles, Barracudas and other American-designed arms capable of striking objectives up to 800 kilometers away.
Kremlin Reaction to Comments
Similar to earlier instances when criticised by Trump, he brushed it off, hoping for the US leader to reconsider his stance.
He described the former president as a “agreeable discussant” who knows “how to listen” and said Moscow was seeking a “total reestablishment” of ties with America, praising Trump’s administration for its “straightforwardness and honesty”.
Responding to Trump’s critical description, Putin suggested the statement might have been ironic, stating: “If we are comfortable being at war with the whole Nato bloc, but we’re a paper tiger, then what is Nato?”
War in Gaza
The Russian leader also applauded Trump’s plan to resolve the Gaza conflict, saying that former UK prime minister Tony Blair – expected to play a central role in the initiative – could “help achieve progress”.
He then went off topic to reminisce about how he once stayed overnight at the former PM’s residence and the two had coffee together the next morning “in their pyjamas”.
Critical Remarks on Europe
The rhetoric was clearly stronger when it came to the European continent, with the bulk of his criticism directed at the region, faulting “EU officials” for obstructing peace in Ukraine and “whipping up hysteria” in the region.
He said: “They claim that war is at hand. This ridiculous assertion is recycled endlessly … Can they genuinely accept that Russia plans to strike Nato? If so, they are utterly unqualified, as the idea is baseless, or they are not being truthful.”
Maritime Dispute
The president also denounced the seizure by France this week of the personnel on an oil tanker from Russia’s “shadow fleet” which was accused of serving as a base for unmanned aircraft that forced Danish airports to close last week.
He said: “The tanker was seized without any grounds in neutral waters. This is piracy.”
War in Ukraine
On the war in Ukraine, there was little indication that Putin was seeking a negotiated settlement or reducing his ultimate objective of forcing Kyiv’s capitulation.
Although Moscow has made limited advances, he maintained that his military were “confidently advancing” along the entire front.
He also stated that Ukraine was suffering much higher casualties than Moscow – although assessments from the West put Russia’s toll at close to a million, exceeding Ukraine’s.
“Considering the Ukrainian casualties, the Ukrainian leadership should think seriously about starting negotiations,” the president said.
Zelenskyy’s Appeal
Attending heads of state in the summit, Zelenskyy said Moscow was “escalating its harmful activities” and appealed to EU nations to show the “determination” to act without delay.
The Ukrainian president emphasized: “It is evident that collective measures and coordinated work are essential for true safety. No nation can face this danger alone.” He urged the continent to “raise the pressure immediately, to compel Moscow to stop the war and alter its approach”.
